IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Help us prevent donkeys from facing the trauma of the auction system.
When a donkey is no longer useful to their owner, or their owner is unable to take care of them, many are sent to kill pen auctions, where they are sold to the highest bidder. Bonded pairs, including moms and their babies, are almost always separated and sold to different buyers. The process is physically and emotionally traumatic for these unwanted donkeys as they await their uncertain fate — many are bought by foreign companies who intend to slaughter them and use their hides for medicine.
Let’s join together to prevent donkeys from entering the auction system in the first place. By expanding our sanctuary facilities at Oscar’s Place, we’ll allow owners to surrender their donkeys directly into our loving care, instead of the frightening auction system. To protect the health of our herd, we’ll need to build intentional quarantine spaces for single donkeys or small groups for the new rescues. We’re building a new donkey village of 5 shelters (four with their own 30 x 40 foot pen and one larger for families or bonded groups) so that we can welcome owner surrender donkeys while protecting the health of our existing herd. We haven't been able to do this before, because new donkeys need to be quarantined apart from the other animals in a separate space for at least two weeks — a space we've never had, until now.
With your help, we can make this a reality.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
There are many creative ways that you can help. This is more than a fundraiser for money. Do you know someone that works at a lumber mill? Are you related to a plumber? Are you a member of a group that can all work together to buy a small shelter?
Donations make the greatest impact, whether you have $5 or $5,000 to give.
FUND A SHELTER
A donation of $4,858 can fund the remaining shelter, which will have a plaque with your name above the door.
Organize a fundraiser with your family and friends. Have an upcoming birthday? Ask for donations instead of gifts!
SPREAD THE WORD
Use your voice. We often hear surprise in people’s voices when they learn about our work. Help tell our story and be a hero for our donkeys.
Are you a skilled laborer willing to donate your time? Do you have an uncle who works at a lumber yard? Contribute valuable resources or connections to the cause!
